Members of the Texas House Republican Caucus Completed the Opening Day Ceremony to Begin a Critical Legislative Session
(Austin, Texas) -- Today, the 83 members of the Texas House Republican Caucus were sworn into the Texas House of Representatives. Both in-person and remotely, family members, friends, and constituents gathered to watch as Secretary of State Ruth R. Hughs administered the oath of office from the House Floor.
“Today’s opening day ceremony of the session starts the clock on a busy 140-day legislative schedule. Regardless of the circumstances, the people of Texas have high expectations for their elected officials and we plan to meet those expectations by delivering results on key issues ranging from balancing the state budget to health care to property taxes and more,” Caucus stated Chairman Jim Murphy said after the ceremony.
In addition to being sworn into office, the first order of business for the Texas House of Representatives was to elect Representative Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) as the Speaker of the Texas House for the 87th Legislative Session. A member of the Texas House Republican Caucus, Speaker Phelan was selected as the Endorsed speaker candidate by his Republican colleagues in early- December.
The Texas House Republican Caucus is comprised of all Republican members serving in the Texas House of Representatives. The Caucus provides research, education, policy development and other support to its members and their staff.
